Dabbang Observations

15 09 2010

Dabbang made its intensions quite clear with its trailer only and the film is exactly what it promised to be, an out and out masala pot-boiler which knows its target audience and expectations. To be honest, though am not a hard-core Salman fan , I believe he has that Star appeal that always manages to attract my “larger than life” character loving nature. When Wanted released I somehow pressed this attraction and watched a much more sensible and beautiful film, Up – the animated film by Disney. This time though there was nothing stopping me and I went ahead just to observe the film and people’s reaction.  So here goes a list of a few observations I made while watching the film:

  • I went for the first day first show of the film which was filled with hard-core Salman fans and as a result they were all pumped up to cheer “Sallu Bhai” and were even hooting watching the trailer of Golmaal 3, which is another product that appeals to a similar kinda audience that wants Paisa Wasool film with as less logic and reality as possible.
  • The film lasts just a bit more than 2 hours which makes it bearable for an audience that expects a little more sense and not just disshum disshum and some skin show .
  • Speaking in Management terms, Dabbang is an excellent product because it satisfies its target audience and their expectations to the best.
  • Rahat Fateh Ali Khan can make even bland lyrics like “Tere mast mast do nain , le gaye mere dil ka chain” sound melodious and hummable .
  • Sonakshi Sinha has that Indian girl looks which would appeal to any guy and she also does her job of being an eye candy well. She manages to catch the attention of the audience in a film which is all about Salman . Her dialogue “Thappad se dar nahi lagta saahab , pyaar se lagta hai” made the audience go nuts over her .
  • “Chulbul Pandey” , “Chhedi Singh” and “Makkhi” are the sort of names that you would remember even after the film is over .
  • Though I may not have enjoyed the film a lot I would accept that I didn’t get bored at any moment, its brisk pace didn’t let me.
  • People love gravity defying stunts and naturally bullet proof hero.
  • The music acted like small doses of drugs which kept the audience going with “Munni Badnam” being the high point of it.
  • The film is all about “DIALOGUES”, bole to bol bachan. The film literally begins with dialogues and ends with it too.  Dialogues like “hum tum mein itne chhed karenge , ki confuje ho jaoge ki saans kahan se le aur …….” , the blank confidently left for audience to fill in towards the end.
  •  Sonu Sood has very smartly given up the chase of being a lead in films and found his place in character roles like the one he played in Dabbang and also in his earlier films like Singh is Kinng and Jodhaa Akbar. He is being appreciated for these roles and he should continue doing them.
  • Salman is no Hrithik Roshan but his simple moves make his dancing also a favourite amongst his fans. If it was moving his shirt collar in Wanted this time it was the turn of his pants for Udd Dabbang .
  •  The makers know that the film reaches out to a wider audience and they have very clearly put across social messages in the film so that they reach out in the true sense. With Salman delivering dialogues like “Do Boond pilana bhul gaye” for the heroine’s Polio struck brother and Om Puri saying “Aajkal ki janta Dharmpradhan Neta nahi Karmpradhan neta chahti hai” and “Cast your vote but don’t vote your caste”  thus addressing the political issues with a lighter note and a simple language .

One of the final observations that I would like to end with is that is it now Salman’s turn after Akshay Kumar to churn out hits from mediocre films. Just like Akshay enjoyed his spate of mindless comedy films which his fans loved for some time and now are rejecting them, is Salman’s new found fame which began with Wanted like mindless action comedy masala films also short lived?
