Rock On !!! — Music Review

8 07 2008

The music of first Rock Music oriented film is out now and the album is mostly a rock album with majority of tracks belonging to Rock music genre . Rock Music belongs to the west and it is their forte , not ours and this is what comes out clearly in this album . The last attempt at rock music was made in Metro by the “Metro Band” headed by Pritam . The songs of Metro were a huge hit and if you ask me they were no doubt the best of Pritam . There is one thing to take note from the songs of Metro and that is that they were Rock songs but the Lyrics of those songs were completely Indian with no western touch to them . Even the singing style was completely Indian . The album thus became a huge hit . But one thing is that Metro songs were not purely Rock and can be called Indian Rock instead . But  again pure Rock songs would never work in India . We always want some Indian Flavour in the western dishes . Thus I am doing this review for people who are not die-hard Rock music fans because Die-Hard rock fans might love this album .

Rock On is a complete opposite case . Not only the tune is western but also the Lyrics are quite inspired from west in the sense that they have been kept pretty crude and simple . The singing style  is also being directly picked from them . The Album has Nine songs in total out of which Six are by Farhan Akhtar which according to me was the biggest mistake . Farhan is just about an average singer and he has not sung songs at a professional level . One Advice for him — “Dude , Acting in a rock oriented film is still OK but singing six songs in it is just too much and you cannot do everything , leave something for professionals “.  He could have tried KK , Shaan or probably Sonu or some new guy who is a professional singer and can Sing to any genre of Music . KK did an amazing job in Metro and there is no song in this album that can match “O Meri Jaan” from Metro .

Well , talking of album , the first song on the Album is Socha Hai by Farhan which is a good track but the tune is a typical one and there is nothing new about it . The lyrics are quite interesting and are pretty catchy . The strength of this track lies in its lyrics hence this song would get popular “only” because of its lyrics and not because of its tune or singer . The songs on the album are very youth oriented and so are the lyrics . Nice track , lacks a great tune .

Then comes “Pichle Saat Dino Mein” which is again a song that has a complete western touch to it in terms of both lyrics and music . These type of Lyrics are usually seen in songs by young boy bands in west just because they don’t have much experience in writing . These lyrics might suit an amateur rock band of high school but would not suit to a Grown up band . The song has a fun feel to it and might be liked by youth at large . But that liking would be only for short period of time and not evergreen. Here also I felt that the lyrics would be responsible for the popularity of the song more than the tune or singing .  It is a bit hard to believe that Jaaved sir can also come up with such lyrics .

Then comes the title track which is on air these days and getting quite popular . I don’t know how many of you remember this but the main Music of this song has been directly lifted from the Background score of Lakshya . If you remember there is a scene in Lakshya where Hrithik and his team climbs the Cliff and during that entire sequence a great background score is played . That background score is used in this song and a full fledged song has been made out of it . Though Music of Lakshya was also by SEL so we cannot say they stole it . Yet , the tune is a great one and hence the song is also “rocking” . By the time this track will arrive on the soundtrack you’ll get a hang of Farhan’s singing and realise his limitations as a singer . The lyrics are not made in Poetic fashion and are more oriented towards language that we use in daily life . Though the lyrics are by Jaaved Akhtar but I am sure here also Farhan would have given some inputs here and there . Overall , the song is the best on album and would be most popular one . This is the only song which impressed me in terms of music but here the lyrics were a bit weak .

Then comes Yeh Tumhari Meri Baatein by Dominque Cerejo which is a nice slow track that usually a girl singer sings at a lounge , restaurants etc . Simple lyrics and tune and nothing great about it . Dominique is great singer and probably can sing a better song than this . These type of tracks can be used in background in a film where they sound much better .

Then comes Zehreelay by Suraj Jaggan which again looks inspired from songs of west . The song has a tune like a Metallica song or a Greenday song . I know that Metallica and Greenday are from two different genre of Music but this song I feel doesn’t belong to either one . It is a mix of little bit of both .  Fast Rock song with excessive electric guitaring in it . A treat for Hardcore Rock Lovers and who like to play music at full volume . Again nothing new about it and would look good only in the film . One positive is that at least Suraj sings better than Farhan in terms of rock genre .

Then comes a slow track Tum Ho Toh which is a sad song and again has a western feel to it completely . Listen to it carefully and you can almost imagine an english track . At least they could have made this one better and little Indian . A sad and slow song yet it has a rock feeling to it . An average track again and didn’t impress me that much . Regular stuff . Farhan continues .

Then comes Sinbad The Sailor again by Farhan . I had once attended a rock concert where a local band played the title track of famous Duck Tales cartoon series and it got a great crowd support considering all of us have sung that song in our childhood . A bit of a similar concept has been tried over here where the track focuses on Sinbad The Sailor and tells his story . Again nothing new about it , same old tune that can be composed by any Local Band for sure .

The next track on the album is a “STUDIO” made Live version of Pichle Saat Dino Mein . The Live version is supposed to be live 100% but I don’t think this one is . It has been recorded in studio and Live effects have been inserted . In all , it is pretty much the same as the previous one .

The last track is Phir Dekhiye by Carlisa Monteiro who tries to sing the song like Celine Dion , slow and some parts at high pitch . I am tired of saying this but the tune has nothing new again and we have heard several English songs like these .

Overall , the album has use of typical tunes and nothing new about them . SEL have disappointed me very much as I was expecting much more from them . It almost felt that the Director had given SEL some of his favourite english songs and compose accordingly . The lyrics by Jaaved Akhtar were different from his usual stuff , in a good way or bad , I can’t judge . Personally , I wasn’t impressed that much .  Still , the songs are not that bad and can be listened once in a while . The album is more of an experiment which might or might not work . I think  it lacks creativity (considering big names like SEL , Jaaved and Farhan) and definitely some good singers .

Album Rating : Two and a Half out of Five Stars ; Good for one listening .

The above review was biased. Let me tell you i heard the songs. Farhan is a good singer. The songs are too good. Give the guys some credit instead of saying “they picked it up from any western song”.. If you know for so much surity please enlighten us as to what are these “bands” from where the songs were supposedly “picked up”…
and what was that s**t about “sounds like Greenday OR Metallica”??? The dude seems confused… Metallica is a metal band.. Greenday on the other hand is a Punk band.. So how can the music be like them.. I mean its okay if he says it sounds like Metallica or Megadeth cuz they are of the same genre but Metallica or Greenday…??? That was funny.. The guy has no idea whatsoever about the styles of singing or whatever.. Farhan did a great job considering he’s not a pro… And one more funny thing i found… “Sonu or Shaan cud have sung better”.. Dude are you nuts? Man cud they have sung rock songs..??? No need to answer ..We all know…
“Not creative” —> O yeah!! You call Pritam creative!! Atleast SEL don’t pick up note to note songs from some Asian flick!!! 🙂

Anyways..the soundtrack is too good…I’ll give it 4/5…Brave effort..New sound… The lyrics are good (Jaaved Akhtar wrote them — don’t say he “lifted it up”..its insulting)

Believe me I’m a professional musician and definitly know more about music than the guy above… Give it a try.. Be open while you listen to it..You’ll love it.. Progress is made by experimenting not by sitting and re-manufacturing what we’ve been making from years…

Kudos to Farhan and SEL….

Rock On!!!

he heh 😀
darling…you forgot the cardinal rules of reviewing something, namely :
1) One should not be biased against any genre. You’ll deny this vehemently, you may even proclaim to be a rock aficionado. But any person of IQ >= 80 can comprehend your stand by simply reading this post.
2) If a person is reviewing something related to Music, he/she should have ‘some’ knowledge in music. When you find a song similar to Green Day or Metallica, it just shows your level of ignorance, as Green Day and Metallica belong to completely different genres. By the way, rock doesn’t mean loud music “to make their neighbours deaf” 🙂
3) This is the most important one…..if you are a fool, don’t flaunt your foolishness on the web just because you can. Start loving yourself, don’t be a masochist….don’t write blogs that will result only in people laughing at you.

P.S. – I haven’t heard the album yet. But was simply appalled by this review. I think you should call it OPINION, not a REVIEW, so that it doesn’t show up on Google when one is searching for REVIEW.

I Publically apologize if my review or opinion is wrong about the Album . Frankly I and that just means me , didn’t like it so I have said it . The fact that I have mentioned Metallica and Greenday together is because that particular song belongs neither to Punk Rock and neither to metal .Its a mix of both . Maybe You guys are right and you know more in Music than me but I have not said anywhere that don’t listen to it or don’t buy it . I have just said that its not that good . And one thin I can guarantee everybody that it won’t get more popular than Metro . I know Pritam lifts off songs completely but that doesn’t matter if a song is a hit . He won’t get credit for it but still it is a hit . On the contrary I have not said that Lyrics have been lifted ; I have said that they are just like western lyrics , quite crude . And last but not least If I right a review and its a good review that doesn’t offend anybody none of you guys give a shit about it …don’t even say two words of appreciation and when it offends you a little you write the longest comments on my blog . I won’t change my review , let it be a wrong one .

8 07 2008
Saurabh

And when did I call Pritam creative . That guy Rips off songs from head to toe BUT still his songs get popular don’t they . I just said that these songs of Rock On won’t get as popular as songs of Metro did . The creativity lacked in this album but that doesn’t mean that Metro had abundance of it . Read the review with a cool mind then you’ll see what I have actually written .

One of the most biased reviews ever read.

Come on ! for how many years u r going to hear the same old lovydovy songs from bollywood. its a different attempt , a very good one and u must appreciate it.

saurabh swami

you think shaan or sonu cud have sung these songs better????
imagine sonu singing a rock song. 😀
why people forget kk , he z d best in rock genre…i hope u know who is kk.

9 07 2008
Saurabh

you guys are makin fun of Shaan and Sonu so that means you think Farhan is a better singer than them…cmon. And if you would look the other side Rock Songs are supposed to be high pitched and poor Farhan didn’t even go to a higher pitch except a few times . And I again didn’t say that KK can’t sing these songs . I cannot list every singers name . I gave example of Sonu and Shaan which represents “Proffesional Singers” and any of them could have sung them “better” than Farhan .

9 07 2008
saurabh swami

i m not saying that farhan has sung that better…..but sonu and shaan also cant sing such songs…they may be professional but there voice is not suitable for such songs.

i m sorry if I m off topic here, its just that I m kk fan and thought that you shd hav mentioned his name esp. when u r talking of rock songs.
but its not ur fault dude, people in general dont know who kk is( or dont want to know).

9 07 2008
Saurabh

If you ask me I personally think KK would go big time in coming future since Sonu and Shaan have sung so many songs , people wan’t a new voice and KK will surely be the voice all the young heroes in future . If you observe carefully, even Industry has accepted it . KK is in music scene since a long time but it is now that he can almost seen on every movie album . He surely is the next big thing in Playback Singing . Anyways thanx saurabh for commenting on my blog . I hope to read your comments on all my posts in future .

My Verdict – the album is superb. Some Megadeth, some greenday, a bit of Ac/DC, hint of Joe Satriani (Sochta Hu) and soulful lyrics by Javed Akhtar.
What else do you want?

…I want the lyrics of the song Rock On! Can anyone paste it up here?

Peace…and Rock On \m/

all pritam songs are copies man.. all songs in that metro movie were plgarized like all of his other movies.. queensryche was even trying to sue him for copying silent lucidity. anyways, dude u r free to review whatever u want however u want, i think u can easily get a job in rediff or something.. and make money doing this.

11 07 2008
Saurabh

Hi dude .. I am tired of explaining this but I have never praised Pritam and I would never do so . I have just said that his songs are more popular . Is that a lie ? I have given his example bcoz the only attempt at rock music genre was done by him in Metro . I don’t like him at all but still his songs are a hit . I think SEL have far more talent than what they have shown in Rock On . They got a chance to do something different and they took it quite casually . This is certainly not their best and I expect more from them and Farhan who is one of my favourite film makers . Farhan in my view was a perfectionist after he made DON which is an almost perfect film . But he took this album casually probably bcoz its Abhishek Kapoor who has Directed the movie not him

Saurabh..
U should have applaud their attempt.

Well Rohit , thanx dude 4 commenting on my blog . I had first written a long comment in response of ur comments but now I think I don’t need to explain myself again and again . Read my post and comments and try to understand what I’ve written … and u may get what I want from the producer’s . One more thing , dude hav some respect for “sa re ga ma pa” too . I like Rock music too but I don’t despise whats ours …….I’ve appreciated their attempt and given them two and half stars ..what more do you want ?

KayKay (KK) is the most versatile singer of today… he is much better than Farhan and so much more suited to singing songs from this genre

I have to applaud this bold attempt by SEL..and Farhan.. Its about time bollywood music breaks free from the traditional lovey dovey crap.. This is a refreshing change and i think the album is great.. Rock is essentially a western product..so cant create a rock song without atleast a few inspirations from the west.. But SEL has done a great job in creating some new music instead of ripping off(like Pritam)..
And it is preposterous to suggest Shaan or Sonu can sing these songs..I actually laughed at tht.. Have u heard their sounds??.. lol.. U need a grungy sound to sing in Rock.. K.K has tht.. and i think Farhan did a pretty good job singing..
And i see ur point of Greenday and Metallica..i think the background guitar riffs are like Greenday and vocals like Metallica?.. I actually see it as a good thing..cause tht shows experimentation..and thts pretty good too..
I have just one advice to u.. Please dont b biased when u listen to a new thing..(perhaps this is a new thing to u).. I agree with many before me tht this is indeed a great album..period..

dude what’s the f***in problem with you , dude we accept your genre
“the hindi music genre” , good songs in your genre , we appraise them too , rock lovers are not just head bangers they are music lovers

but what’s the problem with you why you can’t just accept our genre , this artice wasn’t a review for Rock On , it was you hatred against rock , get a life dude , you are really sick !

and how can you comment on Rock when you don’t even know difference between green day .

and no one Becomes Pink floyd in just one album , it’s not possible that someone will instantly become floyd in a cliched music industry like indian .

you ask us what’s new here , can you tell , what change indian music got from loong loong time .

and , farhan totally suits as singer to these songs , it’s the way rock is sung , and you like socha hai becaue it’s the song which is more pop then rock , and yeah india loves pop so you did .

Rock on is a pathbreaking thing for indian music , and it’s hypocracy if you’ll compare it with floyd , people like you would have even forced floyd to do suicide by criticizing their work saying it’s not clapton .

why the hell they don’t have report as abuse option here !

30 07 2008
dopa

lots of time i feel sorry about india ,
i love india , i love indian culture , i love everything about it ,but what i hate about india is hypocrites like you .

you may hate people who have nearly banned Valentine day in india ,
dude look clearly you are also one of them , your drive is same as them !

and i don’t feel sorry about it , i feel the sadistic happines , that one day you are going to get so frustrated that you’ll become the one of the worst cynics of this hypocrite society
because dude

Rock has just arrived and it’s going to stay a loong loong time , you’ll die before that , EnJoy !

Cheers !

Well , you are the biggest idiot that I have come across on my blog , who gave you the authority to judge people on the basis of what they write …even I can abuse you in my comments but I won’t because its your opinion on me …so you should also understand that it is my opinion on the music . I hate people who feel sorry for India …may be you are not a true Indian . Are you big enough to talk about a nation ? And by BIG I don’t mean your age ..I mean what you are . Even Big Personalities don’t talk of Nations .

I could have easily deleted your comments and even banned you further but what difference does it make .

You are one of those guys who are related to India and don’t realize what the nation has given you .

You call me hypocrite , do you even know the meaning . Hypocrites feel something else and talk something else . But I write what I feel . Just because you don’t like what I felt doesn’t mean you can talk rubbish .

A guy like you can never understand what I have written because you are not ready to accept anything from outside .

Have my word with you always , we are still Indians at heart and we still don’t like a thing that is 100% Western whether its a dress or a language or food . Hollywood films work in every other Nation more than the films that , that Nation produces , but they could never beat Bollywood films in India . Why so ? because we like Indian flavor more . So get one thing clear Rock may work in India in the future but it will be Indian Rock and not the rock that exists in West .

Whats theirs is theirs ,they are experts in it , we should not waste our energy and time in copying them or try to be like them . Rather focus on whats ours and try to be expert in that .

Indian Classical Music is also great but the Western people don’t sing it , they listen to it ,but don’t try to copy it . Because they know that they can never master it . We are fools who run for the west and never RESPECT whats ours , especially guys like you .

I am open to westernization , I respect what is Good from the West . But at the same time I have much more respect for what is ours and very less respect for guys like you . Is this enough or you need something more ???

What you’ve written (nd im being polite) is not a review but just plain criticism. For starters you are quite random and stray off the whole point. It’s susposed to be a ROCK album and is not mixing up genres, so while reviewing it dont review it like a hindi album but like a rock one. What uve done is just gone ahead and shown your ignorance and written a pretty crap review about how rock tunes in India should be mixed with Urdu or some other ‘Indianised’ lyrics. There are differnt lyrics for different genres, but you dont have any idea about them do you? You don’t have any idea about Rock, Metal or Indian classical, not even plain Bollywood songs. To end it, this album’s purpose is to be a Rock album (thats why it’s called ‘Rock On’, ummm duh…..) and it does that perfectly, so the next time you want to write a review please be weel informed about the thing you are writing about, or atleast know how to write a review, rather than crap criticism like Khalid Muhammad.

I just happened to be googling around for reviews about the music of ” Rock On” and came upon Saurabh’s blog. The review was really interesting but even more amazing was the flurry of comments. I can’t believe that in India still people carry around favouritism and together bury others by imposing on them what they believe. Saurabh has every right to express his opinion. I truly respect that and so should all. Everyone can respect there opinion and contradict not use obscene words. No arguement is won with shouting more and all. Its won with valid points.

The music in this movie is a trend. Its a signal of whats to come in future for our cinema. So when the first time its heard. Its sure to become a hit. Something different and rhythmic to hear. Everybody likes a change. This music suits that pshycology.

Regarding who should have sung it. I think the best person to decide that is the music director. Its his composition and when a director composes they have a voice in mind. This time Farhan would have clicked. All due respect to KK, Shaan and Sonu. They all are great singers. But a different voice was required here.

Anyways i am music lover and moreover a person who likes changes. I would rate this 3.5 out of 5.

All due respect to Saurabh for being frank and honest. Folks you don’t have to murder him for that. You can write your own reviews and watch the comments you get for that. I admire his guts for taking all your comments in the stride. Music is meant to spread love not such hatred and favouritism.

30 08 2008
Saurabh Jaiswal

Thank you so much , Rahul . 40 odd comments and yours is the only one that has given me some relief . Don’t you think it is so strange , if something offends people they write so many comments but if they like something they don’t even give a single comment . People in India look out for a chance to bash a person but never say two words of appreciation . No doubt film producers create controversies around their films . It gives so much more publicity .

30 08 2008
Saurabh Jaiswal

And talking about the singer , I would like to share with you that , the guy who wrote this film , Abhishek Kapoor , thought that Farhan’s voice was perfect for the guy in his story and that’s why he approached Farhan with the script . So it is not the music directors that chose him to sing the songs it was probably the writer and director of the film . Farhan loved the idea and gone ahead to produce it .

What is Indian? What is western? Music is Music….. its one of the greatest gift to us from GOD……. we have divided the earth given by him….. Now we are going to divide the music also by saying Indian and western…. ok music can have different style but saying that western music is better then Indian or vice versa, is totally wrong……. as per my opinion “Rock On” music is far better then Metro…. but its totally MY opinion…. that’s what Sourabh did…… yes we can not say it a Review….

I dont know much about Rock music but the Music in “Rock On” is simply awesome….. personally I like Indian Music….. yet I give same ear to every music… And anyone get inspired by other’s music…. and if Pritam did it then there is nothing bad in it ….yes he should have given credit to the original composers….

Dont get into the unneccessary debates …. just give yur opinions man…… and enjoy the music (a precious gift from GOD)………….

Love 4 all…

The music of ROCK ON is exactly that. Great attempt by SEL and I am truly addicted to this album, especially Socha Hai and do definately listen to the falsetto by Farhan in Tum Ho Toh. Offcourse, The title track is a one that will be chanted across the rock lovers in India for some time. Zehreelay, though hard rock, its damn different from the other songs in the album, which shows the amount of experimentation done here by SEL. 😀 Not to forget the jazzy feeling of Yeh Tumhari Meri Baatein and the lovely voice of Carlisa for Phir Dekhiye. Aaha an inspirational song called Sinbad the sailor, just the kind of song for the occasion in the movie and not to forget Pichle Saat Dino Mein. Leave the lyrics, the music is great! 😀

Hi Saurabh,

Thanks for bringing that point about the singer to my notice. But I do feel that even though Abhishek Kapoor had the voice of Farhan Akthar in mind while writing the story. SEL wouldn’t agree to it just like that. They would have had to feel that connection of his song to their songs. A couple of songs in that I really felt K.K could have sung. Really missed him in that album.

Hi Rahul , thanx once again for coming back . Well if Dil Chahta Hai would have never been made then may be SEL would have never came into existence . They owe a lot to him and certainly won’t say to him that he is not that good and would even do a bad album for him . Even I missed KK especially after listening to him in Metro . My whole point was this only that some professional singer might have sung the songs much better . I gave just an eg. of Sonu and Shaan and people started pouncing upon me .

At the risk of being yelled at, I agree with Saurabh… i listened to the album for a couple of times… the first time i simply disliked it but for 1 or 2 songs. I was ok with the music the second time, it seemed straight out of scores of English songs which I have no problems with and the lyrics were totally unnatural.. The singer was literally straining to hit the notes (the orchestra was good but what a waste on such pathetic singing)..it would have been better if the wordings were English. i was reminded of ARR songs, where I would have to bear the torture of butchering the song, pronounciations etc just to fit a ARR tune.
Anyways this is purely my opinion as you have expressed yours in the album’s favor
Kudos Saurabh for sticking to your opinion. Folks here don’t seem to realise freedom of thought and expression.

Hi anon , thanx for commenting and supporting ….hope to see u even on my further posts . I am quite sure that the whole set of guys that abused me and said that I am wrong won’t even listen to the songs after 2 months of the release of the film .

I partly agree with Saurabh when he says that most of the songs sound as if we have heard them before .Songs like ‘socha hai’ ‘sindbad the sailor’ are pretty ordinary and any college band could have composed these songs.
The reason why i am disappointed is because of the high standards set by SEL in all their previous works.
The highlight of the album is the title track.Pichle saat dino..is good …but i really enjoyed the song yeh tumhari meri …check out the cool bass guitar….lyrics of tum ho toh are cliche…composition is average ….and I would have loved to hear the title track in the finale..
the album could have been much much better ….Someone like ARR wud have taken it to a different height….3/5..

Hi harsh , Thanx for commenting . Even I believe the finale song didn’t have the Finale material in it . If that song in the movie had been a super-duper hit track people would have came out of cinema halls elated and all charged up and pumped up and the whole movie would have received a much better response . And you are right that this is much low as compared to the standards set by SEL that is why I have spoken in such a way about the album . I expected a much better album from them and they did it like an amateur band . And if they had to make some amateur sounding songs they should have given chance to some new music directors and lyricists .
